When it comes to your computer system you need it to be secure and safe. In the business world there are many ways to safely store data; using a VPS or a Dedicated Hosting Server. Which ever one you decide to use is the one that should fit your business best. Taking in the consideration of the security your documents, the location of the server and the company you decide to use. You do not want a company that has a poor reputation. And, if the company you are using has recently been hacked, you need to decide if you want to continue to use that company.
A Virtual Private Server, VPS, is usually provided by an ISP. A VPS is a remote computer that is dedicated to the customers use. It stores the data, is accessible by any computer by an authorized user and is securely in a climate controlled room.
Although a VPS stores the data of other customers, it is virtually a different computer and can run many programs simultaneously. It can be tailored to the customers needs and is essentially a separate computer.
A Dedicated Hosting Server is essentially the same as a VPS with one difference. The customer uses the entire server. The client has many options as well. The OS, hardware, software and is more flexible to the clients use. This server is mainly used by companies that have a high volume of traffic.
Which one is best for you though? There are many factors to consider when it comes to deciding which server to use. The cost of the server itself, maintenance, security software, etc. Let's look at the pro's and con's of each server.
The VPS server usually has a built-in maintenance package, or at an added charge. That can be both a pro and a con. If it comes with the package then it is a pro, but the added cost can be considered a con. Although you can have email accounts they are usually limited, and if you want more than it is an added cost.
One con that I see with the VPS is that your data is stored on a partitioned computer. Although the probability of data getting mixed with another client is rare, it can happen. If this were to happen it can create a headache for you. The companies that offer this service are good at keeping data separate, but if it were to happen who would be responsible for it occurring?
The Dedicated Host Server has many pro's. You get the entire server, not partitioned. Unless that is something that you want. You have an infinite amount of email accounts you can create. The server is housed in a data center and have a redundant power supply. The company that you decide to use can offer support for your OS and other software applications at an added cost. But most offer this service within the package you choose. This type of server is more cost-effective if you are a larger company while the VPS is something more in line with smaller companies or individuals. Many smaller companies use the VPS as it is more cost effective. Companies with less than 50 people and their website has a low amount of traffic. But as a company grows I would recommend using a Dedicated Host Server.
